Community Engagement: Police Accountability in Prince Rupert – Wednesday, June 24th, 2026
The BC First Nations Justice Council invites Prince Rupert and surrounding communities to join our Police Accountability Unit (PAU) for a day of dialogue, education, and direct support.
Since our pilot launched in August 2024, the PAU has provided legal representation and support to Indigenous people affected by police violence, misconduct, and negligence. As we explore more options for Indigenous-led oversight and accountability in policing, your voice is essential to ensure our accountability mechanisms are culturally safe and effective.
This full-day event includes two sessions:
Morning: A Know Your Rights seminar to empower community members with knowledge about rights, processes, and avenues for accountability within policing.
Afternoon: A hosted lunch and roundtable discussion to hear directly from community members, service providers, and partners on experiences, perspectives, and opportunities related to policing oversight and accountability.
For more on this work, read Strategy 7 of the BC First Nations Justice Strategy: Stronger Oversight and Accountability.
