General Information
In 2001, Cowichan Tribes entered into a Community Tripartite Agreement with the federal and provincial governments to provide liaison services to the local RCMP and parole/probationary staff.
Programs and Services
QMRJP - Crime Prevention
Quwutsun Mustimuhw Restorative Justice Program (QMRJ) is strongly prevention-based in nature.
QMRJP - Adult Program
Services include but are not limited to bail and probation monitoring; diversion and alternative measures programming; restorative justice circles; coordination of community work services; and facilitation of culturally relevant healing plans.
QMRJP - Youth Program
QMRJ assists with the monitoring of young offenders under the supervision of the Youth Probation office of the Ministry of Children and Family Development. Additional services for youth include: extrajudicial sanctions and extrajudicial measures; restorative justice circles; healing circles; and community work service. Intervention and prevention programming are an important part of our work to support youth in Cowichan communities.
QMRJP - Restorative Justice Process
QMRJ’s Facilitators review and implement a restorative justice process for the first-time offenders.
QMRJP - Alternative Sentencing
Court judges confer with Cowichan Tribes about alternatives to standard sentencing options. QMRJ may assist with pre-sentence reports and alternative sentencing options where required.
QMRJP - Parole Liaison
QMRJ develops community re-entry strategies for Cowichan members who are incarcerated in federal or provincial institutions, based on consultation with family members, the community, the parolee, and their parole officer.
