Anyone who self-identifies as First Nations, Metis or Inuit has Gladue rights and can request a Gladue report. The BCFNJC prepares Gladue reports for bail, sentencing, appeals, long-term offender hearings, dangerous offender hearings and parole hearings.
Gladue report writers are members of a unique and important group working to change the landscape of the criminal justice system for Indigenous Peoples in Canada.
Gladue principles apply across the entire criminal justice system. Taking Gladue factors into account, within the correctional system, involves applying Gladue principles with Indigenous clients.
Legal Aid BC offers a range of free services and gives priority to people with low income, although many of its services are available to all people in BC. Don’t qualify for legal aid? You are eligible to receive legal assistance if you are a member of a community that our Indigenous Justice Centres serve.
We are hosting a series of virtual engagement sessions in November and December to collaborate with communities and other partner organizations on the work of the BCFNJC – please join us!
